The final round of the New Zealand MX Nationals was held and while the weather didn’t come to the party, everything else was well above average.

The MX1 class was the Cody Cooper show, as he won 3 from 3. While Cooper didn’t win the title, he won more motos than anyone else in the class. Darryl King came out of retirement again to show that he still had the speed to be a contender and led the last moto for a few laps. 2nd for the day was the newly crowned champion Justin McDonald, and while he went 2-2-2 for the day, he had enough points over Cooper to take a well earned MX title. 3rd was Brad Groombridge, and he was definitely one of the standouts of the series, also finishing 3rd for the championship.

The MX2 class couldn’t have got any more exciting than it did as both Michael Philips and Scott Columb went down in the first corner of the first moto. While Columb remounted quickly, Philips took a bit longer and then they both proceeded to put a spectacle of passing as they cut their way through the pack. Philips caught and passed Columb and wound his way back to 5th while Columb could only manage 8th. This left the door open for Jesse Wiki to take his second win of the season.

However after 3 motos it was Peter Broxholme wining the weekend with 2-2-3 moto scores, followed closely by Philips with 5-1-2 scores and Columb with 8-3-1 scores. Philips had enough points to earn his 2nd National Championship in the MX2 class, beating Columb by 9 points after 12 motos of racing. 3rd was Peter Broxholme, a large way back as a DNF hurt any chance at challenging for the title.

The 125cc class once again saw the trio of Mike Cotter, Ethan Martens and Damien King go toe to toe, and once again saw King coming out victorious. King didn’t have it all his own way with Martens taking a 2nd moto victory off King. Cotter had good starts but lacked the pace of the other two. Martens finished 2nd for the day and the championship and put up a good fight against King. Cotter was third for the day and the championship, and showed a few of the young ones that they still have a long way to go before they will be challenging for wins.

The class within a class, the Under 21 Championship saw KTM win its first senior title in NZ with Martens taking the victory. Kayne Lamont had a huge crash in qualifying and left with a broken nose and concussion, leaving the door open for Tom Managh to take 2nd in the championship. Due to the inconsistencies of the rest of the class, Lamont still secured 3rd in the championship, although he essentially DNF’d an entire round.
